I know this show has been reference many times in these parts, but after what it did to me on the way to work this AM, I had to call it out again for anyone who hasn't had the distinct pleasure of being battered by it's sonic sledgehammer.

1 Tuning
2 Feel Like A Stranger
3 Loser
4 Cassidy
5 Ramble On Rose
6 Little Red Rooster
7 Bird Song*
8 Me & My Uncle ->
9 Big River
10 It Must Have Been The Roses
11 Lost Sailor ->
12 Saint Of Circumstance ->
13 Deal
14 Tuning
15 Scarlet Begonias ->
16 Fire On The Mountain
17 Samson & Delilah
18 Ship Of Fools
19 Playin' In The Band ->
20 Drums ->
21 Space ->
22 Wheel ->
23 China Doll ->
24 Around & Around ->
25 Johnny B. Goode
26 Uncle John's Band

So many highlights here, including one of the strongest S>F from this era, just immense, and Phil's booming sound in the Stranger. But what really killed me today, other than the quality of this exquisite matrix, was the Playin'. Jerry takes hold of the tune and just has at it. Like a deranged gopher, he digs deep into a groove of absolute magnificence; and like the dirt being thrown about by the aforementioned rodent, Jerry's fingers strew a seemingly unending stream of notes into the air that glitter and shine like a million different crystals. Absolutely stunning in its beauty.
Folks here at work are lucky I can't crank this one today, not only would my furniture be in mortal peril but so would that of anyone in a 12 block radius.

Again, this show is often talked about, but I want to be sure that if anyone hasn't given it a spin and really wants to piss off anyone in your vicinity, this one will certainly do the trick.

...was there...my second show.
The drummers were doing that 'flipping-the-drumsticks-in-unison' thing during Samson. A sight to behold at the Fabulous Furry Fox. Magical times...

UJB encore

I really like this show, first electric bird song since 73...
as far as the scarlet>fire, nice transition jam and I love the tension, however Garcia, dammit, plays too inconsistently throughout fire for this one to be top shelf for me...

SDH - I always enjoy your write-ups. But since I have never seen a deranged gopher I'll have to take your word for the comparative analysis.

Actually I may have seen a deranged gopher - it was eating my Russian comfrey so I shot it.

My co-workers are not as "lucky" as yours. They are enjoying this show (or not). The ones closest to my cube are barely old enough to pee yellow so I don't care - they get all glazed over at the mere mention of Lady Gaga and just can't process real music yet as their brains are not fully developed.

A deranged gopher? I love it. Now I have to go gopher huntin' in that Playin'! Fortunately I have a copy, because my internet is run by a comatose sloth. But maybe I'll try to stream at least the Playin' and see who wins the battle of the comatose sloth vs the deranged gopher!

Mando, my condolence on the Gagaheads. More for them than for you, really, since you can take refuge in real music and they're stuck with Gaga on the brain. I didn't know she really had fans. I thought maybe it was all a media hallucination.

Now I have to figure out what a comatose sloth looks and acts like.

Besides our Congress, I mean.

I digress....

Congress is actually a deranged comatose sloth.

How can anyone say they aren't working? Do you realize the effort and concentration necessary to be both deranged AND comatose? Truly an impressive feat.

So I put this on from Playin. You're right. He IS a gopher. And deranged. In a good way. And it's not from Brent letting Mr Rogers in, either, cuz that's not till later and only for a few brief moments ... Brent is having a great night going along with the derangement and weaving in between the, um, rain of crystals thrown up by the madly digging gopher.

Classic audience comment in Space: "What song is this?"

"...Brent letting Mr. Rogers in..."

Love it. We've had references to Go-Go Gophers AND Mr. Rogers in the same thread. This is good stuff.

excellent call. This is one my favorite 80's show as well as 09-06-80 from 2 months earlier.

That scarlet>fire is THE best 80's rendition I have heard.

oh man. By your subject line I thought you found a rare Playin>fire. I will check this gig out tonight. It also reminded me of the horrible show in Foxboro 1987. Band is going thorough a lazy show and they are noodling Playin. Guy next to me keeps saying, " i hear fire , I hear fire. I'm calling my shot" Not even close. Turns out the guy as on acid.

Sorry lobster, no Playin>Fire to be found. I can give you dates for a Picasso Moon>Fire or a Bucket>Fire?

Though, I really like this particular opening trio quite a bit.

Hey, I seriously thought I heard it.

As for the acid, I needed it to cope with the horror of "Urine Falls" in one of the back parking lots.

Still my favorite S>F and its because of the >. That transition just soars and i love the way it ends with Jerry soloing on high and Phil booming into Fire down low and Jerry coming out of his solo and locking in with Phil. Magnificent. I find it so much more compelling than the '77 S>F transitions.
